Disney's Andor creator teases Star Wars horror project

Author : Jack Sep 25,2025

Disney is secretly developing a Star Wars horror project, as revealed by Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy.

The creative force behind the latest critically-acclaimed addition to the Star Wars universe hinted at Lucasfilm's secretive operations in a recent discussion with Business Insider. When questioned about approaching a darker Star Wars concept, he subtly confirmed Disney already has such a project underway.

"They're doing that. I think they're doing that," Gilroy commented about the rumored Star Wars horror venture. "I think that's in the works, yeah."

If confirmed, this would mark Star Wars' first full-fledged exploration of its darkest elements on screen. The project's format remains unclear - it could manifest as a series, film, or even an innovative hybrid. Details about its creative leadership are equally mysterious, and fans may need to wait years for official announcements about this chilling Star Wars venture.

"The right creator, and the right moment, and the right vibe... you can do anything," Gilroy added, reflecting on his Andor experience. "My hope is that our show's success creates opportunities for others to push creative boundaries like we did, just as 'The Mandalorian' paved our way."

An uncompromising Star Wars horror film has long been a fan dream - even Mark Hamill has expressed interest. While the franchise has extensively explored the Skywalker saga and its periphery characters, its terrifying frontiers remain largely uncharted. Previous projects have occasionally adopted darker tones, but mainstream productions typically maintain family-friendly accessibility.

Andor stands as a prime example of Star Wars successfully embracing mature storytelling while earning critical acclaim. Its 2022 debut made waves (scoring 9/10 in our review), and it remains a franchise high point.
