If you're prepared to dive into the shadowy depths of Minecraft fortresses and face whatever lurks within, this guide is tailor-made for you.
What is a Stronghold in Minecraft?
A stronghold is an ancient, sprawling underground complex composed of interconnected corridors, chambers, and hidden rooms. It serves as both a dungeon-like challenge and a treasure trove of rare loot. Most importantly, it contains the End Portal, which leads to the Ender Dragon—the ultimate boss in the game.

Exploring a stronghold can yield enchanted books, rare armor, weapons, and other valuable items. The structure itself is rich in architectural detail, featuring libraries, prisons, altars, and secret chambers filled with surprises—and threats.

To activate the End Portal, you'll need Eye of Ender, which we’ll cover next. Keep in mind that strongholds cannot be found by simply digging—they’re placed randomly beneath the world and must be located using specific methods.
How to Find a Stronghold in Minecraft
Eye of Ender

The Eye of Ender is the official and intended method to locate a stronghold. You can craft it using:
- 1 Ender Pearl
- 1 Blaze Powder (crafted from Blaze Rods)
Ender Pearls are primarily dropped by Endermen, though they may also be purchased from cleric villagers or found inside stronghold chests.
Once crafted, use the Eye of Ender by holding it and right-clicking. It will float into the air and point in the direction of the nearest stronghold, staying airborne for about three seconds before either dropping back into your inventory or vanishing.

Keep in mind that Eyes of Ender are consumable—some will disappear after use. Since activating the End Portal requires placing twelve Eyes into the frame, you should aim to collect at least 30 before beginning your search.

The Locate Command
For those playing on worlds with cheats enabled, the /locate
command offers a faster alternative:
/locate structure stronghold
This command returns the coordinates of the nearest stronghold. Once obtained, teleport there using:
/tp
Note that the coordinates are approximate—you may still need to dig around to uncover the entrance.
Stronghold Rooms
Strongholds consist of various room types, each with its own design and potential rewards.
Library

The library is a large chamber lined with bookshelves and made from stone bricks and cobblestone. These rooms are often well-hidden deep within the fortress and contain chests with enchanted books and other useful loot.
Prison

The fountain room features a central water source surrounded by mossy or cracked stone bricks, giving it an ancient, mystical ambiance. While not always present, these rooms are visually striking and worth discovering.
Secret Rooms

Hidden behind walls, secret rooms often contain additional loot, including enchanted items and rare equipment. Be cautious—some may trigger arrow traps or hide unexpected enemies.
Altar

The altar room typically contains the End Portal Frame embedded in the wall, surrounded by torches and stone bricks. This is the heart of the stronghold and your gateway to the End dimension.
Stronghold Mobs
Strongholds are home to several hostile mobs, including:
- Skeletons
- Creepers
- Silverfish
While not the toughest enemies in the game, they pose a credible threat in tight spaces. Silverfish, in particular, can emerge from certain stone blocks when broken, making exploration both exciting and unpredictable.
