For fans of the long-running franchise Digimon, the upcoming Digimon Con 2025 is poised to be a landmark event. Attendees can anticipate a slew of new announcements and updates about forthcoming projects within the franchise, but one teaser in particular has captured our attention: a perplexed Renamon paired with a mobile phone.
The most immediate interpretation many of us are leaning towards is the possibility of a digital version of the Digimon Trading Card Game (TCG). Bandai Namco already offers a tutorial app for iOS and Android, mirroring the approach taken with many of their physical TCGs. However, the recent launch of Pokémon TCG Pocket sets a compelling precedent for what Digimon could potentially do.
Yet, it's wise to temper our expectations slightly. The teaser might simply be hinting at mobile as a means to watch the upcoming livestream later this week, rather than indicating a new project platform.
Going Digital
It's undeniable that Digimon, while cherished, remains in the shadow of Pokémon. In the late '90s and 2000s, there was a spirited rivalry between the two, but Pokémon has since claimed the global pop culture throne. Although Digimon holds a special place for nostalgic anime enthusiasts, it hasn't achieved the same level of mainstream success.
Launching a digital TCG for Digimon would not be a guaranteed triumph as it might be for Pokémon. However, it's also not a high-risk venture considering the existing popularity of the Digimon TCG. Expanding its reach to a broader audience could prove to be a significant achievement. We'll have to wait and see what unfolds during the Digimon Con livestream later this month.
