Destiny 2's Year of Prophecy: Key Details for Guardians

Author : Max May 18,2025

Get ready, Guardian — Bungie has just unveiled an exciting lineup for its sci-fi shooter, Destiny 2, under the banner of "Year of Prophecy." This year promises four major content updates, featuring two paid expansions and two free updates, ensuring something for every player.

Kicking off the Year of Prophecy, Rite of the Nine is now available to all players at no extra cost. This update brings a fresh take on dungeon diving, perfect for both seasoned veterans and newcomers. You'll explore familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep, but with unique twists and refreshed weapons, reconnecting you with Orin.

Next up, on July 15, the new expansion Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate launches. This paid expansion introduces a multiyear saga involving the enigmatic Nine, predating the Traveler. You'll meet new characters, Lodi and Ikora, as you explore the new destination, Kepler. Inspired by Destiny 2's dungeons, Kepler offers puzzle-solving and pathfinding challenges, along with new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.

Simultaneously on July 15, major core game innovations will roll out, including revamped armor and gear systems to enhance buildcrafting opportunities. A new activity selection screen, the Portal, allows players to choose between Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the newly introduced Solo Ops, catering to different play styles and reward pursuits. With 50 new modifiers, players can customize their gameplay for greater challenges and curated activity rotations will keep the content fresh.

Destiny 2: Renegades draws inspiration from the legendary Star Wars universe, blending Destiny's unique storytelling and gameplay with iconic sci-fi elements.

This news comes after Bungie's layoffs of 220 staff members in July 2024, representing 17% of its workforce, following another 100 layoffs less than a year earlier.

Alongside Destiny 2, Bungie is also working on Marathon, a reboot of their classic franchise. IGN's hands-on preview of the alpha version suggests it will satisfy the Bungie PvP itch when it launches on PC and consoles in September.
