A recent Destiny 2 update inadvertently resulted in a significant number of players experiencing unexpected changes to their Bungie Names (account usernames). This article details the issue, Bungie's response, and steps players can take.
Destiny 2 Bungie Names Altered After Update: Bungie Issues Name Change Tokens
Following a recent game update, many Destiny 2 players discovered their Bungie Names had been unexpectedly replaced with "Guardian" followed by a random number sequence. This widespread issue, initially reported around August 14th, stemmed from a malfunction in Bungie's name moderation system.
Bungie acknowledged the problem via Twitter (X), stating: "We're tracking an issue where many account names were altered by our Bungie name moderation tool. We're investigating and will provide an update tomorrow, including details on additional name change tokens for all players."
Bungie's name moderation typically flags and changes usernames violating their terms of service (offensive language, personal information, etc.). However, this incident affected numerous players with perfectly acceptable names, some using the same username since 2015.
Bungie swiftly investigated and reported the root cause, implementing a server-side fix to prevent further occurrences. Their subsequent Twitter (X) update confirmed: "The issue causing widespread Bungie name changes has been identified and fixed server-side. We're still planning to distribute name change tokens to all players soon."
While Bungie continues to resolve the situation, affected players are advised to remain patient. A distribution of name change tokens and further communication from Bungie is anticipated.
