Civilization 7 Coming to VR This Spring 2025
Civilization 7 VR Exclusively on Meta Quest 3
Sid Meier's Civilization 7 (Civ 7) is making a bold leap into virtual reality, exclusively available on Meta Quest 3 and 3S. This exciting announcement came from 2K Games and Firaxis Games during the Civ World Summit Event on February 8, 2025. Civ 7 VR marks the franchise's inaugural foray into virtual and mixed reality gaming, promising a groundbreaking experience for strategy enthusiasts.
Civ 7 Executive Franchise Producer Dennis Shirk expressed his enthusiasm in a recent blog post on 2K's website, stating, We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!
Meta's Director of Games, Chris Pruett, highlighted the significance of this release, saying, With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality.
He added, Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans.
It's worth noting that while Civ 7 is available on PlayStation consoles, Civ 7 VR will not be released on PSVR2 at this time.
Board-Game Like Construction and Online Multiplayer
Civ 7 VR introduces a unique Command Table, allowing players to navigate the game world and strategize much like a tabletop game. Players can zoom in to examine the intricate details of buildings and units or take a panoramic view from above.
The game supports both immersive virtual reality and mixed reality, with seamless switching between modes. In virtual reality, players find themselves in a detailed museum overlooking a personalized vista; in mixed reality, the Command Table integrates with the player's physical space.
Civ 7 VR offers diverse gameplay modes including single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer. Up to four players using Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets can join in, with options to include AI-controlled opponents or compete against human players. The game supports online multiplayer, requiring both a 2K Account and a Meta Account.
During gameplay, players can see their friends and opponents as their chosen world leaders, enhancing the interactive experience across the Command Table.
Firaxis Games Respond to Player Feedback
In response to feedback gathered during Civ 7’s early access phase, Firaxis Games is committed to addressing player concerns. Following the Advanced Access launch on February 6, 2025, for Deluxe Edition and Founder’s Edition purchasers, the game has received mixed reviews on Steam, with many players citing issues with the User Interface.
Firaxis Games has acknowledged these concerns and outlined their plans for future updates. Their primary focus will be on enhancing the UI to make interactions more intuitive, improving map readability, and refining areas of polish like formatting.
In addition to UI improvements, the team plans to incorporate community-requested features such as team additions to multiplayer games, a broader selection of map types, and more. A quality-of-life update is scheduled for March, which will address UI adjustments, ongoing AI balance and improvements, diplomacy and crises adjustments, and additional bug fixes.
Civilization 7 VR is set to launch in Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, though a specific date has yet to be announced. Meanwhile, Civilization 7 is currently available in early access and will see its global release on February 11, 2025, across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
