This new iteration, developed by Choice Provisions—the creative minds behind the BIT.TRIP series—puts a fresh twist on Atari's classic brick-breaker game. While retaining the fundamental paddle-and-ball mechanics, Breakout Beyond introduces a unique sideways progression, guiding players from left to right across the screen as they aim to shatter bricks.
As players build up combos, the game's visual and auditory experience intensifies, with lights and effects becoming more pronounced. Additionally, special bricks trigger extraordinary in-game events, such as massive explosions or even an actual laser cannon, adding layers of excitement to the gameplay. With 72 meticulously designed levels, Breakout Beyond promises a comprehensive challenge, complemented by an unlockable endless mode that includes an online global leaderboard for competitive players. For those who prefer company, the game also offers a local two-player co-op option, ensuring that no one has to break bricks alone.
Originally slated as an exclusive title for the Intellivision Amico back in 2020, Breakout Beyond's development took a turn when Atari decided to acquire and complete the game. The Intellivision Amico, which was announced in 2018 with an anticipated release in 2020, has yet to hit the market due to multiple delays and setbacks. Last year, Atari stepped in to acquire the branding and rights to Intellivision, but the Amico console itself remains in limbo.
