Borderlands Review Bombed Post-EULA Update

Author : Jason May 29,2025

The Borderlands franchise is currently facing a wave of review-bombing on platforms like Steam following recent changes to its End User License Agreement (EULA) by publisher Take-Two Interactive. Players have expressed dissatisfaction with the new terms, which they perceive as intrusive and potentially harmful to privacy. According to users, the updated EULA grants root-level access to players' devices under the guise of anti-cheat software, raising concerns over data collection practices such as accessing passwords and contact details. While these claims remain speculative, they have sparked significant backlash among the gaming community.

The inclusion of this anti-cheat software is particularly concerning for the Borderlands modding community, which plays a crucial role in the game’s longevity and popularity. Critics argue that such measures could hinder customization and creativity within the game, impacting its core appeal. Additionally, some players question the necessity of these changes, especially since Borderlands lacks a prominent PvP competitive scene, where anti-cheat tools are typically more common.

Despite the uproar, not everyone agrees that the changes are overly problematic. Some users, including Reddit commenter Librask, suggest that the updated EULA is largely consistent with earlier versions and emphasizes that Take-Two retains the right to manage its products as the legal owner. They point out that similar levels of access are standard in competitive titles like League of Legends, Valorant, and Rainbow Six: Siege. However, this argument does little to quell concerns specific to Borderlands' unique ecosystem.

As of now, Take-Two has not issued an official response addressing these concerns. The future of the EULA changes remains uncertain, especially with the highly anticipated release of Borderlands 4 on the horizon. Set to launch on September 12, 2025, across platforms including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, fans eagerly await further clarification from the publisher.
