Larian Studios, the creators of the critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3, have announced a complete shift in focus to their next, unannounced project. The studio has initiated a media blackout, indicating a significant period of silence regarding their future endeavors.

While Baldur's Gate 3's highly anticipated Patch 8 is slated for release later this year, Larian's CEO, Swen Vincke, confirmed via Twitter and a subsequent statement to VideoGamer that the team's full attention is dedicated to their new game. Vincke expressed nostalgia for the journey with Baldur's Gate 3 but emphasized the studio's commitment to its next venture.

The upcoming project is confirmed to be neither a Baldur's Gate sequel nor another D&D title. Instead, Larian is developing an entirely original game, a decision driven by a lack of internal enthusiasm for a Baldur's Gate continuation.

Previous hints about Larian's next game have been scarce. In November 2023, Vincke alluded to a project that would "push many boundaries," while in July 2023, he mentioned the possibility of a future Divinity: Original Sin sequel, though not as the immediate next project.

Speculation abounds regarding the nature of Larian's next game. Given their history with fantasy RPGs, the possibilities are vast: a science fiction setting, a contemporary world, or even a foray into a completely new genre. However, given the studio's commitment to this new project and the self-imposed media blackout, it's likely to be several years before any concrete details are revealed.
