Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed details about a shelved project: a Baldur's Gate 4 prototype.
A Playable Baldur's Gate 4 Prototype Abandoned
Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke, in a recent PC Gamer interview, disclosed that a Baldur's Gate 3 sequel was in development and reached a playable stage. While potentially enjoyable for fans, the team ultimately decided against further development. The decision stemmed from a desire to avoid spending years on a similar project and to pursue original ideas instead. The team felt the need to move on from the Dungeons & Dragons IP after extensive work on it.
The decision, according to Vincke, boosted team morale significantly. The planned Baldur's Gate 4 and Baldur's Gate 3 DLC were both abandoned for the same reasons. Larian is now concentrating on two unannounced projects, which Vincke anticipates will be their most ambitious yet.
High Morale and Future Projects
The team's positive outlook is evident in Vincke's comments about feeling "liberated" by the decision. After a well-deserved break following the success of Baldur's Gate 3 at The Game Awards 2023, the studio will focus on these new projects. While a Divinity sequel was previously hinted at, Vincke clarified that the next installment in that series will be unexpected.
The final major patch for Baldur's Gate 3, including mod support, cross-play, and new endings, is slated for release in Fall 2024.
