New Aladdin Adaptation Embraces Horror Genre

Author : Gabriel May 23,2025

We're entering an exciting era of new adaptations, and the next one to watch is a fresh take on the classic Middle Eastern folktale, Aladdin. Titled Aladdin: The Monkey’s Paw, this project is set to begin production next month. However, don’t expect the familiar, heartwarming narrative from Disney’s 1992 animated classic. This is a very different kind of story.

Described as a “dark, supernatural reimagining,” this live-action adaptation promises to dive deep into the darker aspects of the original legend. The cast includes Nick Sagar, Ricky Norwood, Montana Manning, and Bradley Stryker, who will also take on the roles of producer and director. The screenplay, penned by Charley McDougall, sets the stage for a chilling experience. Filming will occur in the UK, reflecting the film's setting.

According to Deadline, the film's plot follows Aladdin, a modern-day Londoner, who inherits an ancient monkey’s paw believed to grant wishes. However, each wish comes with a devastating price. As those around him suffer from the curse, Aladdin must face a growing evil and the demonic force that thrives on every wish made.

This project is deeply personal for the filmmaking team, as the writer shared in a statement to the outlet: “We always wanted to explore horror through a personal lens — not just the scares, but the human cost of wishes. This story’s been haunting us for a while, and it’s time to let it loose. The best horror films haunt you long after the credits roll. That’s what this story does. It’s sharp, emotional, and full of dread in all the right ways. We’re not just making another horror film — we’re building a world around a truly iconic concept. The paw, the mythology, the characters — it’s all there.”

While Disney’s 1992 animated adaptation remains the most iconic and cherished version of the tale, the story of Aladdin has been adapted into various films over the years, both animated and live-action, in English and other languages. The most recent adaptation was Disney’s 2019 live-action remake, featuring Naomi Scott, known for her role in Smile 2.

Although no release date has been announced for this horror-infused reimagining, the intrigue surrounding Aladdin: The Monkey’s Paw ensures we'll be eagerly awaiting its arrival.
