Kevin Edwards, a former Genepool Software developer, shared never-before-seen images of a cancelled Iron Man game slated for a 2003 release on Twitter (X). The game, reportedly titled "The Invincible Iron Man," aimed to evoke the character's original comic book identity. Edwards worked on the project following the studio's release of X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge.
Edwards' post, including the game's title card, Genepool Software logo, and gameplay screenshots, was followed by gameplay footage from the original Xbox. The footage showcased the game's startup screen and a desert-set tutorial segment.
Activision Cancels "The Invincible Iron Man"
Despite positive fan reaction to Edwards' reveal, Activision cancelled "The Invincible Iron Man" shortly after development began. Genepool Software subsequently closed, leaving Edwards and his team unemployed.
While Activision never publicly explained the cancellation, Edwards offered several possibilities in response to comments: the film's delay, dissatisfaction with the game's quality, or another developer potentially securing the project.
Commenters noted Tony Stark's design differed significantly from later portrayals. Pre-dating Robert Downey Jr.'s MCU depiction by almost five years, the suit design resembled the "Ultimate Marvel" comic book version from the early 2000s. Edwards stated the design choice was the designer's decision. He promised further gameplay footage, but at the time of writing, this has yet to be released.
